Box Score 2 SEARCY – Harding baseball lost both games of a doubleheader to Henderson State on Saturday at Jerry Moore Field. The Reddies won the opener 9-2 and game two 5-3. The three-game Great American Conference series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
Harding has lost seven straight and fell to 18-13 overall and 3-8 in conference play. Henderson State has won its last five and is 18-13 overall and 7-7 in conference.
Harding trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning of game one, but cut the lead in half on a two-run, bases loaded single by
Kyle Atkins.
Henderson State responded with five runs in the top of the eighth, the knockout blow coming on a three-run double by designated hitter Josh Salmon.
Harding had nine hits in the game, with senior
Chase Presley collecting his first three-hit game of the season. Atkins and
Matt Calhoun had two each.
Nathan Eller (3-2) pitched a complete game for Henderson State, allowing two runs (one earned) with no walks and six strikeouts. Harding starter
Logan Holthaus (1-2) suffered the loss. He gave up seven hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Harding again battled from behind in game two. The Bisons trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth but scored three to tie it.
Paul Anzalone singled to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Atkins. Anzalone scored when Reddie pitcher Dusty Thornton threw wild to first base in an attempt to pick off Atkins. Two more runs scored on
Billy Ninemire's double to left center to tie the game.
Henderson State won it with two runs in the top of the seventh off Harding reliever
Andrew Fiddler (2-3). Zac Zdanowicz singled with one out and scored the eventual game-winning run on Taylor Coleman's triple, his second of the game. Coleman scored an insurance run on a ground out by Salmon.
Henderson State reliever Tyler O'Bryant (3-3) pitched a perfect sixth inning and picked up the win. Dustin Hudson earned the save by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Atkins, who was 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, had two of Harding's five hits in game two. He also stole his team-leading 21st base of the season. Coleman had three of the Reddies' six hits.
