SEARCY – The 17th-ranked Harding baseball team returns to Jerry Moore Field on Friday for the first two games of a three-game series against Quincy. The doubleheader, originally scheduled for Saturday, will begin at 1 p.m. The teams will conclude the series Saturday with a single game at noon.
Harding (14-5) has played its last five games on the road after opening with 14 straight at home. The Bisons won two of three in a Great American Conference series at Arkansas-Monticello last weekend and dropped two one-run games at 27th-ranked North Alabama on Tuesday.
During the five-game road trip, Harding sophomore
Matt Calhoun went 12-for-20 (.600) with four runs, three doubles, a triple, two home runs and eight RBI. The team hit .306 during the stretch with 24 extra-base hits in the five games.
Harding's pitching staff struggled on the road trip but continues to have the lowest ERA among GAC teams at 3.30. The Bison pitchers have been very good at home this season with a 2.23 ERA.
Harding's pitching will need to be good this weekend against a Quincy team that scored 35 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas Tech on Tuesday. The Hawks defeated the Wonder Boys 21-18 and 14-10. Quincy hit six home runs in the doubleheader.
The Hawks, members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, are 4-5 overall and have played their first nine games on the road. Last season, Quincy was 35-20, won the GLVC Tournament, and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament, where the team lost its first two games.
Harding and Quincy met for the first time last season with the Bisons winning 13-3.
Harding will likely go with the same weekend rotation it has used this season with junior
Logan Holthaus (1-0, 3.72) in game one, junior
Hayden Shirley (3-0, 1.89) in game two, and junior
Lucas Waddell (2-0, 2.25) in game three.
Quincy's starters from last weekend's series against Ouachita Baptist were Clayton Hicks (0-1, 9.31) and Taylor Robson (1-2, 7.16), who started both games of Sunday's doubleheader.
