Harding Baseball Wins Series Over Ouachita Baptist

Lucas Waddell became only the fourth Harding pitcher with 20 career wins.
Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Harding junior right-hander Lucas Waddell allowed only four hits over eight innings and the Bisons held on for a 4-3 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Saturday in Great American Conference play at Rab Rogers Field.

With the victory, the Bisons won the series two-games-to-one after splitting a doubleheader yesterday. Harding improved to 21-15 overall and 6-9 in GAC play. Ouachita Baptist fell to 19-19 overall and remained a game ahead of Harding at 7-8 in conference. The Tigers are currently sixth in the GAC, with the Bisons seventh. The top six teams advance to the GAC Tournament in May.

Trailing 1-0, Harding took the lead with two runs in the fourth. Ryan Modglin walked with the bases loaded for his sixth RBI of the season. Paul Anzalone's sacrifice fly then scored Kyle Atkins with the Bisons' second run.

In the fifth, Chase Presley walked and went to third on Billy Ninemire's single. Atkins grounded out to second to score Presley and give Harding a 3-1 lead.

Anthony Guglielmi, who had three hits, scored Harding's final run in the sixth. He singled to lead off the inning against Ouachita Baptist starter Josh Everett (3-5). Modglin then doubled in Gugliemi for his second RBI of the game. Everett gave up 11 hits and four earned runs and left after six.

Ouachita Baptist closed the gap with single runs in the sixth and in the eighth off Waddell. Harding sophomore Bronson Smith entered in the ninth and was greeted with a double by McCrae Jones, who represented the tying run. Kurt Peppenhorst pinch ran for Jones and moved to third on a groundout. He never got any further. Landon Moore grounded out to third, and Landon Flax grounded out to Smith, who earned his team-leading sixth save.

Waddell (5-2) became only the fourth Harding pitcher ever with 20 career wins. He is only two wins behind the Bisons' career leader, Matt Walter, who went 22-13 from 2000-03. In typical fashion for Waddell, he got 14 ground ball outs.

Harding returns to Jerry Moore Field on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Christian Brothers beginning at 2 p.m.
