DURANT, Okla. – Harding senior right-hander Hayden Shirley won his fourth straight start to help the Bisons earn a doubleheader split Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma. The Bisons fell 9-3 in game one before winning 5-2 in game two.
The final game of the series will be at the Ballpark in Durant on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior Cameron Walker is the probable starting pitcher for the Bisons.
With the split, Harding is 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the Great American Conference. Southeastern Oklahoma is 8-7 overall and 3-5 in conference.
Shirley (4-0) struck out a season-high seven hitters and allowed only two runs on four hits over six innings.
After the Savage Storm scored a run in the first, Shirley settled in and blanked Southeastern over the next five innings.
Harding used two doubles to score two runs in the second. Matt Calhoun led off the inning with his third double of the season and scored on Chris Hardey's second double. Gabe Fyock drove in Hardey with a single to right center.
The Bisons added to the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. Trent Wooldridge drove in a run with a single to left, and Harding capitalized on two Southeastern errors to score Wooldridge and Billy Ninemire.
Evan Ramsey led off the top of the seventh with a home run to cut the Harding lead to 5-2, and Bronson Smith replaced Shirley. Smith walked one but got the last three outs for his third save.
Brandon Marris (0-3) pitched a complete game but took the loss for the Savage Storm.
Southeastern starter Vance Woodruff (1-2) limited Harding to only five hits in the opener. The Savage Storm scored two in the second and five in the third off Harding starter Lucas Waddell (1-1). The big blow was a grand slam by Nick Grimmett.
Ninemire and James Anderson had two hits each for the Bisons.
