HU Men's Basketball Clinches GAC Co-Championship in Home Finale

SEARCY – It was nearly a perfect Senior Day afternoon Saturday the Rhodes Field House.

On a day when Harding was honored as the Best Road Trip in College Basketball and the Rhodes Field House was at full capacity, the Bisons made 12 3-pointers, defeated Southeastern Oklahoma 85-58, and clinched a share of their first Great American Conference championship.

With the victory, Harding finished the regular season 20-8 overall and 13-7 in the GAC and earned the No. 1 seed in next week's GAC Tournament in Bartlesville, Okla. Harding will play No. 8 seed Southern Arkansas on Friday at 6 p.m. It was Harding's fifth 20-win season in program history.

Harding shot 58 percent in the first half and made 5-of-7 3-point field goals. The Bisons led 26-22 with 4:20 remaining before halftime, and closed the half on a 9-0 run. Junior Hayden Johnson, who led Harding with 27 points, scored five during the run, and the Bisons led 35-22 at the break.

A Johnson layup with 15:28 left gave Harding its lead of more than 20 points at 50-29. Senior Zach Roddenberry made two free throws with 6:58 left to make the score 70-49. Harding led by 20 or more the rest of the way.

Roddenberry scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He scored his 10th point on a free throw early in the second half that made him the 33rd player in Bison history to reach 1,000 career points.

Harding shot 56.5 percent from the field and made 12-of-22 3-pointers (54.5 percent). The Bisons also made 21-of-26 free throws (80.8 percent). Southeastern Oklahoma (15-11, 11-9) shot only 35 percent and made only 2-of-17 3-pointers. The Savage Storm entered the game as the second-best 3-point shooting team in the GAC, trailing only Harding.

Southeastern Oklahoma is the No. 6 seed and plays No. 3 seed Arkansas-Monticello in the conference tournament.

Andris Misters led the Savage Storm with 20 points.

Roddenberry, Bradley Spencer, Adam Sterrenberg and Matt Walters were honored in a post-game Senior Day ceremony. Roddenberry, Spencer and Walters have participated in 74 victories in their four seasons at Harding. Sterrenberg joined the Bisons this season after transferring from Arkansas State.
