HU Baseball Falls to Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday in GAC Action

SEARCY – Arkansas-Monticello scored three or more runs in an inning three times and defeated Harding 12-1 on Sunday in the third game of a Great American Conference series at a very windy Jerry Moore Field. The Weevils won the series two games to one. Temperatures Sunday were in the low 40s with strong wind gusts from right field to left field.

With the loss, Harding falls to 15-10 overall and 8-7 in GAC play. The Bisons are in sixth place in the standings with the top six teams advancing to the GAC Tournament in May. Arkansas-Monticello improved to 17-13 overall and 9-9 in conference, one-half game behind Harding and in seventh place.

Arkansas-Monticello took advantage of three hit batters and a Harding error to score three runs on no hits in the first. The Weevils scored another unearned run in the third. UAM had five hits in a four-run fourth inning and got a solo home run from Tyler Caruthers in the fifth.

Harding scored its only run in the sixth. Junior Trent Wooldridge reached on an error, stole second and scored on another error.

Arkansas-Monticello ended the game after seven innings with three more in the seventh to invoke the NCAA's 10-run rule.

Arkansas-Monticello junior Chris Guzman (1-1) pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed four hits and no walks and struck out six. Harding senior Lucas Waddell (2-2) pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out three in the loss.

Junior Erin McCarver, who doubled, had the only multi-hit game for the Bisons. He was 2-for-3.

Harding will return to Jerry Moore Field on Tuesday to host Union University from Jackson, Tenn. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
