ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding baseball split a doubleheader with Henderson State on Saturday in Great American Conference action at Clyde Berry Field. The Bisons won the opener 2-1 on a Trent Wooldridge sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, and the Reddies won game two 14-4.
Harding (23-16, 13-11 GAC) won Friday's series opener 11-0 and won the series two games to one. It was the Bisons second straight road series victory over the Reddies. Harding won all three games in Arkadelphia in 2011. The Bisons have won their last two road series, also taking two of three from Northwestern Oklahoma.
With the series victory, Harding remained in sixth place in the GAC standings, one game ahead of Southeastern Oklahoma (12-12 GAC). The Bisons are one game behind both Arkansas-Monticello (15-11 GAC) and Arkansas Tech (14-10 GAC).
Both starting pitchers in the opener, Harding's Lucas Waddell and Henderson State's Austin Coble, allowed only one unearned run each through the game's first eight innings.
With the game tied at 1-1 entering the ninth, Harding loaded the bases without a hit. Victor Guerra led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Kyler Offenbacker's sacrifice bunt. Gabe Fyock walked and Kyle Atkins reached on an error to load the bases. Wooldridge, who went 2-for-4, then hit a line drive to Henderson State leftfielder Tyler Coleman, who made the catch. Guerra tagged at third and scored, but Coleman's throw home was cut off and Fyock was thrown out at third to end the inning.
Waddell gave up a single to Dustin Hudson to lead off the bottom of the ninth, and in came Harding closer Josh Spears. He worked around a Bison error to get the final three outs and record his second save.
Waddell (4-3) extended his school record with his 25th career win. He allowed eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts over eight innings. Coble (6-3) took the loss.
Henderson State (21-17, 15-9) salvaged one game in the series with the victory in game two of the doubleheader. The Reddies scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings and totaled 15 hits.
Harding starter Hayden Shirley (6-4) did not survive the second inning and took the loss.
Atkins was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. He had a two-run double in Harding's four-run second inning.
Henderson State starter Dustin Hudson (6-3) went five innings for the win.
Harding's Billy Ninemire had hits in both games and has a 10-game hitting streak.
Harding and Henderson State will meet again on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Searcy for a non-conference contest.
