SEARCY – Harding used a season-high 11 hits and received solid starting pitching from senior Logan Holthaus and defeated Truman State 9-4 on Sunday in baseball action at Jerry Moore Field. The victory gave the Bisons a series sweep of the Bulldogs. Harding won 7-3 and 3-2 on Saturday.
Harding improved to 5-2 on the season and hosts Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday beginning at noon. Truman State, a first-year member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and playing its first games of the season, fell to 0-3.
Trailing 2-0, Harding scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Trent Wooldridge, Zac Stewart, Erin McCarver and Matt Calhoun each drove in runs in the inning.
Harding plated three more in the fourth with Stewart driving in another run. The Bisons led 7-3 after four innings.
Holthaus (1-0) struggled a bit with his control in the first inning and gave up two runs, but settled in and allowed only two unearned runs over his next five innings. He yielded six hits and struck out two.
Senior Bronson Smith pitched two scoreless innings of relief, and sophomore Hunter Payne pitched a scoreless ninth.
Truman State used five pitchers. Sophomore Tyler Spencer (0-1) started and took the loss. He pitched 2 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs. Senior Chris Allard, who pitched the bottom of the eighth, was the only Bulldog pitcher that did not allow at least one run.
Stewart was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and James Anderson went 2-for-3. Sophomore Davis Richardson also had two RBI.
Senior Paul Trenhaile went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs and was 6-for-10 in the three-game series.
