ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding women's tennis won its second straight match with a 9-0 shutout Saturday over Delta State of the Gulf South Conference. The match was played at the Heflin Tennis Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.
The Lady Bisons, ranked No. 9 in the ITA Central Region Rankings, improved to 4-2 overall and snapped a 15-match skid against Delta State that dated back to 1995.
Harding swept all three doubles matches. Piper Huey and Benyapa Phumtip improved to 2-1 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 victory. Ali Rowden and Katie Huff are also 2-1 as a team and won 8-2 at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Lauren Doversola and Kaleigh Wagner won the tightest match, outlasting Alex Howe and Sara Alvarez 9-7. Doversola and Wagner are now 3-1 as a doubles team.
In singles action, Rowden won her third dual match at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sophie Niemeyer. Piper Huey improved to 4-0 in No. 2 singles matches with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Katharina Assmann. Phumtip did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hidemi Mayeshiro at No. 3. Phumtip has a team-high eight singles victories.
Doversola won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 singles for her fifth singles victory. Arielle Butler's 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 was her sixth and gave her a 4-2 record in dual matches. Wagner closed out the victory for the Lady Bisons with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. She is 6-4 this season.
Harding's next action is Monday in St. Louis, Mo., against the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
