SEARCY – Arkansas Tech's Marshawn Arnold made a put-back layup as the buzzer sounded to give the Wonder Boys a 68-67 victory over Harding in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes Field House.
Harding fell to 12-13 overall and 9-10 in Great American Conference action. The Bisons remained in fifth place in the conference standings two games ahead of Southern Arkansas and Henderson State who both lost on Thursday.
Harding plays its regular-season finale Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant, Okla.
Arkansas Tech entered the game ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings and moved one-half game ahead of Southwestern Oklahoma for the top spot in the GAC with the victory.
Seven of Harding's 11 first half field goals were 3-pointers and the Bisons led Arkansas Tech 34-24 at halftime. Arkansas Tech had only eight first half field goals, but five of them were 3-pointers.
Arkansas Tech shot well from long range early in the second half. The Wonder Boys used four 3-pointers during a 17-5 run over a five-minute stretch and took the lead 45-44 on a Clarence Willard layup with 10:45 left. Harding answered with a 3-pointer from Blake McNair to retake a lead that they held until the last second of the game.
Senior Hayden Johnson scored 21 points to lead Harding and become the career scoring leader in the GAC. Johnson made three 3-pointers and also led the team with eight rebounds. Sophomore Jacob Gibson made four 3-pointers and had 16 points, and McNair had 13 points and five assists.
Darrick Little was a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range and led Arkansas Tech with 18 points. Bobby Hatchett scored 15 points, and Arnold finished with 10 points.
It was the final home game for Harding seniors Johnson and Weston Jameson.
