HU Women's Tennis Heads to Missouri for Two Tough Matchups

Piper Huey has won five straight matches and is a perfect 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Harding women's tennis, ranked No. 9 in the ITA Central Region Rankings, takes on a pair of nationally-ranked teams on the road this weekend. Harding opens at No. 33 Southwest Baptist on Friday at 6 p.m. and then plays No. 25 Drury on Saturday at noon.

Harding is coming off a split of two games over the weekend. The Lady Bisons lost 5-4 to Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and defeated Lindenwood (MO) 6-0 on Saturday.

Harding has won 62 percent of its singles matches this season, including 71 percent (32-13) in dual matches. The Lady Bisons have their best dual record at No. 2 and No. 3 singles where they are 7-1 this season. Piper Huey is a perfect 6-0 at No. 2, and Benyapa Phumtip is 6-1 at No. 3.

Huey, a freshman, has a 9-3 singles record this season and has won her last five singles matches. Harding's active singles victories leader is Benyapa Phumtip with 43.

Southwest Baptist lost 5-4 to Arkansas-Ft. Smith in its first match of the season and has won four straight since, losing only one point.

Drury's only blemish is a 5-4 loss to Northeastern State on Feb. 7. The Lady Panthers have won four straight by combined scores of 30-3.

The series between Harding and Southwest Baptist began in 1997. The Lady Bisons and Lady Bearcats also played in 1998, 1999, and 2006 with Harding winning each time.

Harding and Drury played for the first time in 1995 with the Lady Bisons winning 9-0. Harding won the first three meetings. Drury won the next two, and Harding has won the last two. The teams last met in 2002.
