Box Score 2 WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Harding had 20 hits and got a complete game from starter
Logan Holthaus in the first game of a doubleheader with Southwestern Oklahoma and added 13 hits in the second game to sweep the Bulldogs 9-2 and 10-7 on Saturday in Great American Conference action.
Harding improved to 21-15 overall and 13-8 in GAC action, while Southwestern fell to 18-16 and 11-10 in conference.
In the opener, senior
Erin McCarver and sophomore
Noah Chandler both had four-hit games. McCarver was 4-for-6 with two runs and an RBI, his second four-hit game of the season. Chandler was 4-for-5 with a run and two RBI. It was Chandler's first four-hit game as a Bison. Each of the first six hitters in Harding's lineup had two hits or more.
Harding starter
Logan Holthaus (4-1) allowed two runs in the second inning but shut down Southwestern over the final seven innings. It was the second nine-inning complete game of Holthaus' career and the first by a Harding pitcher this season. Holthaus gave up seven hits and two earned runs, walking two and striking out none. He needed only 103 pitches in the complete game.
Harding took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. McCarver had an RBI double, Chandler tripled in a run, and
Victor Guerra scored Chandler with a single to center. The Bisons added a single run in the fifth.
James Anderson tripled to left and scored on Chandler's RBI single to center.
The Bisons blew the game open with five runs on seven hits in the eighth. Harding sent 10 hitters to the plate in the inning. The key hit of the inning was a two-run triple by
Matt Calhoun, the third triple of the game by Harding, a feat accomplished only one other time. The Bisons also had three three-baggers on April 15, 2008 against Central Baptist.
Harding's 20 hits were the most by the team in a game this season, topping the 19 hits in a 25-9 win over Southern Nazarene on Feb. 21.
The hits kept coming in game two as five Harding players had multi-hit games, including Calhoun, who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and his 10th double of the season.
A two-run double by Chandler in the first gave Harding a 2-0 lead. Southwestern answered with a run off Harding starter
Collin Campbell (6-1) in the first and another to tie the game in the third.
But the Bisons took the lead for good with a run on
Davis Richardson's RBI single in the fourth and a six-run fifth inning that included an RBI double from Guerra and a run-scoring single from Richardson.
Harding pulled out to a 10-2 lead with a single unearned run in the sixth. Southwestern committed two errors that led to seven unearned runs in the fifth in sixth innings.
Southwestern mounted a comeback with a run in the sixth and four in the seventh but fell three runs short.
Campbell allowed eight hits and five runs (four earned) over 6 1-3 innings. He struck out three.
Bronson Smith earned his fifth save by retiring the last hitter with the tying run on deck.
Harding's next action is Tuesday in a non-conference game against Union in Jackson, Tenn., at 3 p.m. The Bisons host Henderson State next weekend in GAC action.
