Box Score ENID, Okla. – Harding's Collin Campbell and Andrew Fiddler combined on a five-hit shutout and sophomore John Chapman went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Bisons to a 5-0 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Sunday at the Great American Conference Tournament at David Allen Ballpark.
Harding (28-22) plays again Monday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Arkansas-Monticello and Ouachita Baptist.
With the game scoreless heading into the bottom of the seventh, Harding sophomore Noah Chandler led off the inning with a walk. Davis Richardson then singled, moving Chandler to second. Two outs later, Chapman fisted a base hit into short right field to score Chandler with the first run of the game.
Chapman credited a pregame team discussion with helping him relax in such a tense situation.
"One thing that helped me on this really big stage was when Coach told me before the game, 'You are not alone up there,'" Chapman said. "It is a lot easier in that batter's box when you know you are not alone. It is a team game, and Collin pitched great. When you only have to score one run to win the game, it makes it a whole lot easier."
Harding head coach Dr. Patrick McGaha sees Chapman as an unsung offensive threat.
"Obviously Chappy is known for his glove," McGaha said. "But he has quietly had a really good year offensively for us. He has given us more than we expected and really stepped up for us tonight."
With Harding leading 1-0, senior Trent Wooldridge hit a chopper on the infield that was fielded by UAM pitcher Zach McKnight. His throw to first was dropped by first baseman Bronson Gillam, allowing pinch runner David McKenzie to score Harding's second run.
Harding added three more runs in the eighth. James Anderson led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Chandler doubled to left center to move Anderson to third. One out later, Victor Guerra singled up the middle to score Anderson. Chandler scored on a sacrifice bunt by Zac Stewart, and Chapman drove in his second run of the game with another single.
It was Chapman's ninth multi-hit game of the season and second three-hit game.
Campbell (9-2) allowed only four hits and one walk over seven innings and struck out six. Fiddler allowed only one hit and struck out one over the last two innings to earn his third save. It was Harding's eighth shutout of the season, tying a school record set in 2003.
Campbell became only the fourth Harding pitcher with nine or more wins in a season and the first since Lucas Waddell won nine in 2011.
"Coming into the game, I just wanted to give my team the best chance I could," Campbell said. "I prayed about it the whole week once I knew I was going to start. My sinker was really working tonight; I threw it about 85 percent of the time if not more. I just threw it and let my infield do the work."
Twelve of Campbell's 21 outs came on ground balls, nine of them to Guerra at second base. Guerra had 10 total assists, the most ever in a game by a Harding second baseman and one off the school record of 11 by former Harding shortstop Eric Chin against Central Arkansas in 1998.
Harding head coach Dr. Patrick McGaha had no hesitation giving the ball to Campbell for the key game.
"Collin has just pitched great all year," McGaha said. "He knows the game and has played in big games all his life."
McKnight (4-4) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and two strikeouts over 6 2-3 innings.
