Sanford, Shell Compete in Pentathlon at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Missouri – Two members of the Harding women's indoor track team competed Friday in the pentathlon at the Bearcat Open, hosted by Northwest Missouri State University.

Harding senior Darcy Sanford placed third of 18 competitors, finishing with 3,332 points. Junior Lauren Shell was ninth with 2,914 points.

Sanford, a Montgomery, Alabama, native, scored more than 500 points in each of the five events. Her top score came in the high jump, where she cleared 1.65 meters (5-5) to earn 795 points. Her time of 9.59 in the 60-meter hurdles was good for 791 points, and her personal-best time of 2:30.04 in the 800 meters tacked on 692 more points. Sanford also scored 546 points in the long jump (4.95 meters) and 508 in the shot put (9.67 meters).

Shell, a native of Bella Vista, Arkansas, had her highest point total in the 60-meter hurdles. She finished in a personal-best 10.05 seconds, good for 703 points. She scored 653 points in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.21, and added 621 points in the high jump with a clearance of 1.50 meters.

Harding had three men in action in the two-day, seven-event heptathlon. After day one's four events, Harding senior Matt Hipshire is in fifth place of 13 competitors with 2,571 points. Junior Moses Rivera is 10th with 2,384 points, and freshman Zalen Robinson is 11th with 2,178 points. The leader is Trey Mooney of Pittsburg State at 3,185 points.

Friday's heptathlon events included the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump. Saturday's events are the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
