Monn Hits Discus Provisional, Akins Breaks HU Long Jump Mark

CANYON, Texas – Harding women's track and field had eight athletes compete Sunday at the WT Last Chance Meet, hosted by West Texas A&M.

It was the last meet for Harding athletes to improve previous marks achieved throughout the season in an attempt to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Junior Cooper Monn boosted her chances significantly in the discus. Her throw of 47.25 meters or 155 feet topped her previous best throw by almost 10 feet. She ended the season ranked 19th in Division II.

Monn is likely the only Lady Bison to earn a spot at nationals with her performance Sunday, but junior Jenna Akins had a memorable day as well.

Akins broke the Harding outdoor long jump record set at 19 feet, 3.25 inches by Cathy Ebenja in 2012. With her last of six jumps, Akins sailed 5.90 meters or 19 feet, 4.25 inches to set the new record.

Akins finished the season ranked 35th in the long jump in Division II.

Harding's athletes find out Tuesday who receives invitations to nationals.
