Defense Key as Lady Bison Volleyball Downs Henderson State, 3-1

SEARCY – Senior defensive specialist Emily Tate had a career-high 36 digs as the Harding volleyball team defeated Henderson State 3-1 in Gulf South Conference action in the Rhodes Field House Thursday night. Harding moves to 9-8 on the season and 4-1 in the GSC West Division, where it is tied with Christian Brothers and Arkansas Tech for first place.

Tate's career-high was the first time a Harding player has had over 35 digs since Meredith Rosenbaum (2004-07) had 39 against Ouachita Baptist on Oct. 9, 2007. It was also the first time in her career she has had over 30 digs.

Harding had a season-high 99 digs in the match. Five Harding players ended with double-figured digs. Freshman outside hitter Mollie Arnold and sophomore defensive specialist Weslynn Williams both had a career-high 17 digs in the match. Junior defensive specialist Amber Parker added 12 and sophomore setter Amber Schinzing added 11.

Arnold and Schinzing both picked up a double-double. Arnold led Harding with 17 kills and Schinzing had 44 assists in the match. It was the sixth time Arnold has had a double-double and the 10thtime for Schinzing.

Sophomore outside hitter Reagan Smith tied Arnold to lead the Lady Bisons with 17 kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Anderson added 10.

Harding had 59 kills with 29 errors on 190 attempts, a season high, for a .158 hitting percentage. The Lady Bison defense held the Lady Reddies to 39 kills with 25 errors on 169 attempts for a .083 hitting percentage. It was the second straight match Harding has held their opponent under .100 hitting.

Henderson State (11-8, 3-2 GSC West Division) was led by Robin Law who had 18 kills and 19 digs.

Henderson State had 92 digs on the night. Ashley Totten led the Lady Reddies with 28. Ariel Smith added 17 and Stephanie Batchelder had 14.

The Lady Reddies had nine blocks in the match. Rayla Doty led HSU with three.

The Lady Bisons will be back in action next Tuesday as they continue GSC play traveling to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Ouachita Baptist at 7 p.m.
