Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Washburn; Defeats Northwest Missouri on Saturday

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Harding volleyball team ended the Washburn Classic with a win and a loss. The Lady Bisons came close but fell to No. 4 Washburn 3-2 in the morning session but bounced back to defeat Northwest Missouri State 3-1 in the afternoon. HU is now 15-6 overall.

The Lady Bisons fought hard but came up short against fourth ranked Washburn. Harding split the first two sets and came close in the third set but fell 26-24. The Lady Bisons bounced back to take the fourth set 27-25. Washburn capitalized on eight attack errors by HU in the fifth set as they took the set 15-4.

Junior outside hitter Mollie Arnold led HU with 20 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Marindia Turner added a career-high 18 kills for the Lady Bisons.

Four Harding players had over 10 digs in the match – Lisa Copeland (18), Taryn Eubank (17), Mollie Arnold (13) and Amber Schinzing (12).

Schinzing controlled the HU offense with 52 assists. It was the third time this season she has had over 50 assists in a match.

Washburn (17-1) had five players that had 10 or more kills. Kelsey Lewis led WU with 15.

Washburn finished with a .225 hitting percentage. WU held HU to hitting .173.

Harding closed out the tournament on a high note. The Lady Bisons won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-12. Northwest Missouri rallied to prevent the sweep, taking set three 25-20. Harding fought off the Northwest attach in the fourth set winning 25-22.

Mollie Arnold captured a double-double (15 kills and 17 digs) to lead Harding. Arnold led HU with a .382 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Alyssa Short added 11 kills for the Lady Bisons.

The HU defense had 76 digs, led by Lisa Copeland who had 23. Harding combined for ten blocks in the match. Alyssa Short led HU with five and sophomore middle blocker Liv Savage added four.

Shelby Duren and Whitney Mason led Northwest (12-7) with 15 kills. Duren and Tori Beckman led the defense with 21 kills apiece.

Harding's Mollie Arnold and Amber Schinzing were named to the All-Tournament Team selected by the participating coaches.

Harding will be back in action on Thursday as they host Union in non-conference action at the Rhodes Field House at 7 p.m.
