SEARCY – The Harding women's softball team won both games of a Great American Conference doubleheader Saturday at the Lady Bison Softball Field with 5-3 and 2-0 victories over Southern Nazarene.
The softball series was the first ever played on campus at Harding and resulted in three wins in four games. Harding won the Friday's opener 4-2 and lost 8-4 in game two.
Harding improved to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in GAC play. The Lady Bisons play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday against Christian Brothers in Memphis.
Southern Nazarene dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in conference.
In the opener, the game was tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the fifth. Andee Frazier relieved Southern Nazarene starter Kayla Wyatt, and Jessica Greene greeted her with a single to center field. Kinsey Beck then reached on an error as she tried to sacrifice Greene to second. Kimmy Hendricks' sacrifice bunt moved Greene to third and Beck to second with only one out.
A third consecutive bunt, this one by Amanda Berdon, scored Greene from third and gave the Lady Bisons a 4-3 lead. Beck scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Carolyn Clayton.
Harding starter Amber Rollins (3-1) held Southern Nazarene hitless over the final two innings to give the Lady Bisons the victory. Rollins pitched her third complete game of the season and allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned).
Frazier (3-4) took the loss in both games for the Crimson Storm.
Beck scored Harding's first run on a wild pitch in the first, and Brookelynn Moon drove in two with a bases-loaded double in the fourth.
The Lady Bisons received another outstanding pitching effort in game two. Freshman Danielle Hubbard (5-2) pitched a complete game and allowed seven hits and one walk in recording Harding's first-ever shutout.
Harding had only two hits in the game but they came from back-to-back batters in the fourth and resulted in the Lady Bisons' two runs.
Greene singled to right field to lead off the inning and stole second. With Greene at second, Moon bunted into the vacated hole at shortstop, and Greene came all the way around to score the first run. Moon stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.
Moon drove in three of Harding's seven runs in the doubleheader and scored another.
