HU Women's Tennis Opens GAC Play with 9-0 Victory over Henderson State

SEARCY – Coming off a 17-day layoff, the Harding women's tennis team looked sharp in a 9-0 victory over Henderson State on Tuesday in Great American Conference action at the Harding Tennis Complex.

Ranked No. 9 in the ITA Division II Central Region, Harding improved to 6-5 overall with six shutout victories. The Lady Bisons are 1-0 in the GAC and have defeated the Lady Reddies eight times in their last nine meetings.

Henderson State fell to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the GAC.

Harding won all three doubles matches for the sixth time this season. Piper Huey and Benyapa Phumtip improved to 5-3 as a duo with an 8-3 victory over Sara Griffin and Hannah Watson at No. 1 doubles.

Ali Rowden and Katie Huff won 8-3 over Sarah Camras and Brittany Harness at No. 2 doubles. Rowden and Huff are now 4-3 together this season.

Harding's No. 3 doubles team of Arielle Butler and Lauren Doversola won 8-1 over Tyler Reaves and Maddie McJunkins and is now 2-1.

Leading 3-0 after doubles, Harding won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Butler was the first to finish with her second career 6-0, 6-0 victory. She defeated Reaves to move to 7-6 in singles this season.

Kaleigh Wagner clinched the team victory for Harding with a 6-2, 6-1 win over McJunkins at No. 6 singles.

Huey made quick work of Watson at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. It was the 10th singles victory of the season for Huey and gave her seven wins in her eight matches when playing No. 2 singles.

Rowden picked up Harding's next point and earned her 20th career singles victory when Griffin retired with a hip injury. Rowden led 6-1, 3-0 when the match ended.

Phumtip won her team-high 12th singles match, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Watson at No. 3 singles. Phumtip, who played the match with her family from Bangkok, Thailand in attendance, earned her 45th career singles victory.

The longest match of the day came at No. 4 singles where Doversola battled back from one set down to win 1-6, 7-5, 11-9 over Harness. Doversola is a perfect 3-0 in three-set matches this season.
