SEARCY – The Harding softball team swept Arkansas Tech in a Great American Conference doubleheader on Tuesday winning both games by a 4-3 score. The Lady Bisons came from behind in both games. Marley Edwards had the game winning hit in game one and Courtney Derrick had the winning hit in game two.
Harding improves to 20-15 overall and 12-10 in the GAC. The Golden Suns fall to 13-17 overall and 5-13 in GAC action.
Game One
Arkansas Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Harding tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when Marley Edwards grounded out to first but Kimmy Hendricks scored from third. The Golden Suns scored two in the top of the fifth on three hits and a Harding error.
The Lady Bisons held Arkansas Tech scoreless the rest of the way, setting up the win in the bottom of the seventh. Kinsey Beck walked to start the inning for Harding. Brooklynn Moon grounded out but sent Beck to second. Kimmy Hendricks singled up the middle to put runners at first and third for Carolyn Clayton. She grounded out but got the RBI to pull Harding within a run, 3-2. Hendricks advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mackenzie Jones walked and Heidi Abston came in to pinch run. Marley Edwards hit a double off the left field wall for the game winning hit that scored Hendricks and Abston.
Harding left 10 runners on base in the game.
Amber Rollins (11-6), reigning GAC pitcher of the week, got the win for Harding, pitching the complete game. She gave up eight hits and struck out nine. Sydnee Clark (6-6) got the loss for Arkansas Tech.
Game Two
Game two started out much like the first game as Arkansas Tech took a one run lead in the top of the second and then added one more in the fifth. Harding tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI doubles by Kimmy Hendricks and Carolyn Clayton.
The Golden Suns took a one run lead in the top of the seventh when Ashley Keen hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Whitney Robinson.
With one on and one out, Jessica Green singled up the middle to put runners at first and second. Courtney Derrick had the game winning hit that went through the right side and rolled to the wall that scored both runners.
Amber Rollins (12-6) got the win in one inning of relief. Danielle Hubbard started the game for Harding and went four innings, gave up four hits, one run and struck out three. Megan Gipe pitched two middle relief innings. She gave up three hits, two runs and struck out a batter.
Carlie Caruthers (0-2) got the loss for Arkansas Tech.
Harding will continue Great American Conference action this weekend as they travel to Alva, Okla., to face Northwestern Oklahoma. First pitch on Friday is at 2 p.m.
