Derrick’s Grand Slam Lifts Harding Softball

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.  – The Harding softball team split with Henderson State in Great American Conference action on Saturday. The Lady Reddies won the first game 9-1 and the Lady Bisons came from behind to win the second game 9-5.  

Harding moves to 27-20 overall and 19-15 in the GAC. Henderson State moves to 24-17 overall and 20-10.

The Lady Bisons sealed their spot in the 2014 GAC Championship Tournament on Saturday. The tournament will be held in Bentonville, Ark., May 1-3.

Game One

Henderson State 9, Harding 1 (6 Innings)

The Lady Reddies scored one in the first, three in the second and then five in the sixth to get the win in six innings.

Harding's only run came in the fifth inning when Amanda Berdon homered to left field. The Lady Bisons only had two hits in the game and had three fielding errors.

Henderson State was led by Kayla Williams who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Cagen Medlock (11-3) got the win for the Lady Reddies. She pitched the complete game for Henderson State. Medlock gave up two hits and one run. She walked three and struck out five. Amber Rollins (15-9) got the loss for Harding. Rollins had five strikeouts.

Game Two

Harding 9, Henderson State 5

Harding fell behind 5-3 after Henderson State scored two runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Bisons scored 6 runs in the top of the seventh led by Courtney Derrick's grand slam to right field. It was Harding's first grand slam this season and it was Derrick's second home run.

Derrick went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs and four RBI. Brookelynn Moon also went 3-for-4 with two runs. Carolyn Clayton, Amanda Berdon, Kimmy Hendricks, Marley Edwards and Courtney Chambers all had an RBI in the game.

Harding had 13 hits, five in the top of the seventh.

Henderson State made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases with two outs but Harding got out of the inning with a pop up.

Danielle Hubbard (10-9) got the win for Harding. She pitched her second complete game. Hubbard gave up eight hits and three earned runs. She walked four and struck out two. Cagen Medlock (11-4) got the loss only pitching a 1/3rd of an inning.

The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow in Arkadelphia at 1 p.m.
