SEARCY – The Harding softball team swept Ouachita Baptist in Great American Conference action on Saturday. The Lady Bisons won 6-5 in eight innings and then won 9-1 in six innings.
Harding improves to 30-23 overall and 22-18 in GAC action. Ouachita Baptist falls to 17-33 overall and 12-24 in the GAC.
The Lady Bisons sealed their spot in the 2014 GAC Championship Tournament last weekend. The tournament will be held in Bentonville, Ark., May 1-3. Harding will be fighting for seeding the rest of the way. The Lady Bisons are currently in sixth place in the GAC standings.
In the games, Harding sported grey and pink jerseys in support of Strikeout Cancer. The money raised will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Game One
Harding 6, Ouachita Baptist 5 (8 innings)
Harding jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on three hits. Carolyn Clayton singled up the middle that drove in Courtney Derrick for the first run and then Kimmy Hendricks singled through the right side that scored Clayton.
Ouachita Baptist scored three in the top of the second on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. Harding tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Kinsey Beck drove in Jessica Greene.
Harding got another run in the third when Courtney Chambers walked with the bases loaded.
The Lady Tigers took a 5-4 lead in the fifth scoring two runs after Kate Lacina homered to left field.
Down to their last out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Chambers was hit by a pitch as Brookleynn Moon scored the tying run.
Harding got out of the top of the eighth as Ouachita Baptist left two runners in scoring position. The Lady Bisons started the bottom of the inning with two bunt singles. The runners advanced a base after a sacrifice bunt by Brookelynn Moon. Derrick, the runner at third, scored on a wild pitch that gave Harding the victory.
Amber Rollins (16-11) picked up the win for Harding, throwing a complete game. Rollins, the GAC leader in strikeouts, had eight strikeouts. Abbi Frakes (11-16) got the loss for Ouachita Baptist.
Derrick had three hits and two runs in the game. Clayton, Hendricks and Kinsey Beck all had two hits. Courtney Chambers had two RBI.
Game Two
Harding 9, Ouachita Baptist 1 (6 innings)
Ouachita Baptist broke the scoreless tie in the third on a RBI single by Jocelyn Jones. Harding held the Lady Tigers scoreless the rest of the way. The Lady Bisons scored five runs in the fourth inning and didn't look back. Harding added two more in the fifth and the sixth.
In the fourth, the Lady Bisons had three hits on three errors led by Courtney Derrick and Kinsey Beck who both doubled and had two RBI. Courtney Chambers got the other RBI for Harding.
Chambers picked up her second RBI in the fifth inning after doubling to left field.
Beck and Marley Edwards both had three hits for Harding.
Danielle Hubbard (12-10) got the win for the Lady Bisons. She pitched five innings only giving up four hits and a run. Megan Gipe came in relief for Harding and pitched one inning. Macy Nantz (1-5) got the loss for Ouachita Baptist.
The Lady Bisons will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Cleveland, Miss., to face Delta State in a non-conference doubleheader that starts at 2 p.m.
