Mathaus Spiering is the first Bison tennis player in the university's NCAA era (since 1997-98) to end the season ranked nationally in singles.
Spiering, a native of Sinop, Brazil, is ranked No. 36 in the final NCAA II singles rankings, released Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Spiering, who was also ranked No. 3 in the ITA NCAA II Central Region Singles Rankings, had a 19-3 overall singles record in 2013-14. He was 14-2 in dual matches, all at No. 1 singles, and won nine of 11 matches against regionally-ranked opponents and two of three matches against nationally-ranked players.
Junior Jon Mark Rowden was also regionally ranked in singles, coming in at No. 19. Rowden, a native of Greenbrier, Ark., had a 14-6 singles record. Both Spiering and Rowden were 1st Team All-Great American Conference selections.
Harding's No. 1 doubles team of Spiering and Yann Le Mat finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Central Region.
